When you want to take off on a vacation but do not have the time, then you go really close to the airport and pretend to fly away 😀 And that could work out well for you if it is the The Signature Club Resort (SCR) that you are visiting because this place takes you away from the hustle and bustle of the city and gives you all that you could have wanted on a holiday, including resort facilities as well as sight seeing options in the historical surroundings.
Brought to you by the well known Brigade group, this club resort is set in 2 acres of the 130 acre, vast, longitudinal property aptly named Brigade Orchards, that includes apartments, villas, a host of amenities and of course delightful mango orchards that tantalize you with low hanging fruit in summers.
I was invited to a staycation at the SCR and being the month of May, I had the advantage of gazing delightedly at fully loaded mango trees.
On our arrival in the SCR vehicle, we were welcomed with a drink and after checking in to our rooms, we had a leisurely lunch.
After this we were taken for a grand tour of the club and its facilities and being a mid summer cloudy day, the walk was a pleasant one, made more exciting by the sight of fruit laden mango and fig trees and one large chameleon that posed so very patiently and fearlessly as we tried our best to capture its majesty.
Club overview –
With architecture that is a mix of the contemporary and charmingly old fashioned, the reception area and rooms are of modern decor and they interconnect by a passage that is flanked by a traditional courtyard and an ancient well and sheltered by a tiled roof.
There are 45 rooms that include 28 king size, 12 twin sharing and 5 luxury suites.
In a bid to stay connected to nature, every tree is labelled with its botanical and local name and neem, jasmine, acacia, pongamia, coconut, areca, fig, and mango abound in the grounds. A gigantic banyan tree is the star of the gardens with its prop roots spreading majestically around. In fact they have an area earmarked for trees planted by visiting celebrities.
Being the month of May, the mangoes were in near ripening stage and unfortunately not ready for picking or eating. Those planning to visit can take note of the fact that in June these beauties will be ripe and will also be served to the guests. That would actually be enough incentive for me to re visit 😀
Several varieties of flowers add color to the gardens and also attract butterflies and bees. The beautiful lawns hold frogs and insects that ‘activate’ their orchestra at night. Their soothing lullaby like ‘guttural mutterings’ are a far cry from the ‘motoral sputterings’ that break the silence of the nights in my house … in the heart of big, bad, noisy Bangalore city.
Recreational activities –
The SCR has a commendable range of amenities and sports facilities that are sufficient to entertain a wide section of vacationers. Children have a play area of their own and adults have many of their’s too 😀
Among the indoor facilities and games, they have a large indoor swimming pool, a children’s pool, badminton courts, squash, carom, paintball, billiards, table tennis, steam room, gym and a serene Yoga terrace.
Those indulging in outdoor sports have access to professional tennis courts, football field, athletic track and even a cricket field !!! Cycles are also available for those who want to explore the area on wheels.
The Tamarind is the main restaurant where all buffets as well as a la carte meals are served.
The Courtyard cafe is the all day option for beverages, snacks and pastries, with decor that reminds one of Hansel and Gretel’s pastry cottage, with a coating that resembles dripping, melting chocolate 😀
While the rest of the amenities and ambience are beyond reproach, I must say that they could certainly do with improving the dining experience in terms of both food and service because in my opinion, the fare is certainly not up to the standards of a resort of this caliber. A better selection and quality of dishes, will go a long way in making the holiday memorable, especially for people like me for whom good food is a big part of any holiday.
However, the a la carte fare tends to be a tad better than the buffet offerings and the one dish that we quite liked was the stuffed mushrooms encased in a crispy exterior.
Also, the breakfast buffet was definitely better than the lunch and dinner but could also do with some tweaking.
The Pavilion bar is well stocked and apart from the indoor seating is is also attached to a large and airy terrace space where a stuffed tiger keeps a sharp eye on those who might make trouble 😀 In our case, there was no chance of that occurrence, since the bar was closed due to elections.
