Tucked away from the main road and yet pretty much in the vicinity of many touristy spots, Clouds Valley, Munnar is a hotel which is popular among those looking for a convenient location at prices that are gentle on the pocket.
Munnar the picturesque hill station in the Idukki district of Kerala, India, was the last halt on our media tour which was courtesy of the Kerala Travel Mart (KTM) Society and this 5 day expedition was a precursor to the KTM 2022 which was held in Kochi, Kerala from May 5th – 8th, 2022.
Clouds Valley is listed as a 4 star hotel but to be honest, though it is a reasonably decent place, it leaves a lot to be desired and it does not live up to that rating.
We had just an overnighter there but even in that short span it was easy to spot the lack of hygiene with rusted water bottle caps, the rather dingy ambience, the average quality toiletries and other such findings.
But as I said, it works fine as a reasonably acceptable place and the competitive pricing is definitely an attractive factor. Apart from this, the views from the rooms are quite scenic and one tends to ignore all the flaws while gazing out of the large glass windows. The front facing rooms look out on the town and also offer a panoramic view of the distant hills and the rear rooms are said to overlook a charming tea estate, though I did not have the opportunity to check this out.
Rooms –
The hotel has 52 rooms across 5 floors, fortunately connected by an elevator. The rooms are categorized as deluxe and valley view. They are equipped with the basic amenities like free WiFi, electric kettle for tea/coffee, flat screen TV, safe, bed and bath linen etc.
There is no air conditioning (presumably because the place enjoys the year round cool/cold weather of a hill station). The hot water though available, might need some prompting of the housekeeping staff, who have to turn on a valve to make it happen.
The room and bathroom are quite spacious and the bed is quite comfortable. The large mirror is also very convenient.
Dining –
The restaurant serves local as well as multicuisine food and while there is nothing gourmet about it, the fare is reasonably satisfactory.
Getting there –
The nearest airport is at Kochi and this international airport is 130 km away. Madurai airport is 160 km away.
Nearest major railway stations to Munnar are Aluva station at 110 km, Ernakulam Junction (South), Kochi at 125 km and Madurai Junction at 130 km.
Taxis are the most convenient way to get to Munnar from these places.
