South Ruchis Square

South Ruchis Square, Race Course Road, is a purely vegetarian restaurant that makes use of organic produce to a large extent, and also incorporates millets into many of its dishes.
This place serves mainly South Indian cuisine along with a North Indian and a Chinese section, for variety.
Operational through the day, they cater to the breakfast, lunch, snack time and dinner needs of their clientele.

Run by an amazing couple who have inspiring stories to tell of their personal hurdles and how they overcame them with great grit and strength and also by switching to healthier foods like millets, this place serves foods that they themselves believe in. In fact many dishes are from recipes that are created by the owners themselves.

Raghunath Srivatsa and Ramya Raghunath, located me on Facebook and very kindly invited my family over to have a meal with them. We were touched by their hospitality and the elders in my family were also very taken up by their respectfulness and desire to seek their blessings.

We had the Millet thali which is an unlimited one, serving rice, upma, pongal, phulka, payasam, papad etc all made from various millets, along with the usual accompaniments of sambhar, rasam (which was very good), bajjis (vegetable fritters), etc. The items vary through the week.
There was also a very refreshing Ragi milk shake along with the food.
The thali was quite good and pleased everyone.

I had the Ragi wheat stuffed tandoori roti from the North Indian section and the texture and taste were quite enjoyable.

Their breakfast items, other than dosas, are served through the day and we tried their Kadubu/Mooday – an idli variant steamed in screw pine leaf cups, which was excellent.

They have weekend specials that include Neer dosas with jackfruit and coconut mix, Poori and mango seekarane and other interesting fare. Also, once a week they have Candle light dinners … and maybe on those days you would want to leave the rest of the family back at home 😀
Satvik and Jain variants of some dishes are also produced on request.
What is most endearing though, is the little pot of golden ghee placed at each table. Unique to this restaurant and enhancing the joy of ghee’leeful diners 😀

The decor is on the duller side (my personal opinion) and I would have been happier with a brighter ambience but once one begins the meal, one tends focus on the more important stuff 😀
I also felt that more of the dishes could have had millet variants too and I was told that on request, they do accommodate and provide millet substitutions, where ever possible.
The staff could also do with some tweaking and fine tuning and my feedback was well received.

Despite such minor glitches, the level of success that they have achieved in the few months of opening, is evident in the fact that the 108 seater place has people waiting for a table even on a week day.
