The Oberoi Bengaluru celebrates its 25th anniversary and I was privileged to be invited to experience the special menu that they have curated to commemorate the occasion.
Taking us along with them down memory lane, the chef has dipped into nostalgia and brought forth some of their signature dishes from all their restaurants, that include well loved classics which have featured on their menu over the years from 1992 to 2017.
The special buffet is showcased at the Le Jardin (the garden) which is a befitting location set in the midst of the Oberoi’s lush greenery.
We began with the familiar Chicken tangri kabab that was done to perfection and the faultlessly rendered hors d’œuvre, the classic prawn cocktail with its perfectly poached prawns slathered in cocktail sauce.
This was followed by the Kerala style Meen Pollichathu, with its melt in the mouth fillet of fish coated in a thick paste of spices and roasted in a banana leaf casing.
The old fashioned and comforting Consomme Celestine came next, swimming with herb flecked crepe ribbons and transporting the conversation to the elegance of the simple, understated food of yore.
The continental brought us the thin crust pizzas with the hearty non veg Chorizo and potato and the vegetarian Fungi with its delightful overload of mushrooms.
The star of the meal was the Sikandari Raan, with its enormous helping of lamb leg that had been brined and marinated and cooked in the tandoor to the point of having the meat fall effortlessly off the bone … a dish that I would take the liberty of labelling Raan’tastic !!! Served with vinegared onion rings and rumali roti, both of which I totally ignored, besotted as I was by the main hero 😀
Dessert was Baked Alaska with the chocolate ice cream ensconced in its meringue armor, crafted skillfully to resemble the dome at the Matrimandir in Pondicherry, since Pondicherry was the source of the chocolate.
They also served the Sizzling brownie with chocolate sauce and ice cream.
And when we thought that they had finally had mercy on us, they brought out the Sacher Torte topped with a chocolate coin bearing the number 25.
Well for those who were suckers for Sacher, did not spare a second torte before taking a second torte. Ok I just made that up because hey … I have hardly punned. The truth was we could just about manage to nibble on the decadence.
The party is on from August 12th-26th, 2017, Monday – Saturday at the lunch buffet. Do not forget to check out the charming little labels beside the dishes, that have marked the year that the dish was first served at the Oberoi.
The buffet is priced at Rs. 1675 + 18% GST, with a special discount of 15% for their Founding Day ie August 15th, 2017.
Celebrate with them at their Silver Jubilee … they will make sure you feel jubilant !!!
